Our Why?

Our names are Kayla Kerr and Devan Gambello, and as you may know, we were nominated for the 2023 Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We are honored to be a part of such an amazing cause and work with LLS to find cures for blood cancer and support patients and their families while also raising awareness. 

Team BC We Care is a legacy team previously run by Olivia Hauck (2021) and Isabelle Della Pello (2022) who both won the title of South/North New Jersey student of the Year. We are proud to continue the legacy of Team BC We Care and are excited to embark on this journey!

We are doing this because it is a really great way to spread awareness about blood cancer while also raising money and giving back to those who need it and are suffering from blood cancer. While I, Kayla, have been very lucky to have not been personally impacted by cancer, I have seen it impact many of those around me, like Devan, and I’ve seen how difficult that can be. I, Devan, have personally been impacted by cancer as my grandmother passed away in 2018 from ovarian cancer. She was an extremely healthy and happy woman who walked 7 miles a day with my grandpa. It was unexpected when she was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and I watched her quickly fade away. She fought hard and put on a brave face for her family but we all knew this battle was draining her. Watching the strongest woman I know lose this war made me realize how life is so valuable and how we must make the most of it. Ever since her death, I have been determined to spread awareness of cancer of all types. I did so by running SMAC, Student Movement Against Cancer, with Olivia Hauck, and now my participation in the LLS Student Visionaries campaign.
